This course is an introduction to the materials typically encountered in structural design and analysis. It is divided into three components: Metals, Concrete and Soils. In the Metals section, the topics of crystal structure, plastic deformation, strengthening mechanisms and the mechanical behavior of metals are discussed The Concrete section focuses on the properties of concrete, tension and compression failure, time dependent behavior (rheological and empirical models) and special forms of this heterogeneous, quasi-brittle material. In the Soils section, the student is familiarized with the classification and testing of earth materials. All three sections emphasize the understanding of material behavior; a critical skill for modeling and analysis.
